On-site kit detects SARS‐ CoV‐2
05 February 2021
HYGIENE TECHNOLOGY solutions specialist, Holchem has launched COV-Hygien Xpress On-Site Detection Kit - a rapid lateral flow test to detect the SARS CoV‐2 virus on surfaces within approximately 15 minutes, with no need to transfer samples to an external laboratory.
The test operates in the same way as the allergen rapid lateral flow tests to detect a specific protein on a surface, in this instance it is a protein unique to the SARS‐ CoV‐2 virus.
The test is an environmental surface test and is not for use with samples from human origin. Its purpose is to demonstrate effective decontamination of surfaces e.g. post COVID‐19 cases and enhance existing environmental testing and monitoring programs. It can be used within the food and beverage industries, foodservice and hospitality industries, office environments, health and nursing care sectors and public transport.
The detection strip used in the kit was shown to be able to detect virus at concentrations as low as 5000 pfu/mL (pfu: plaque‐forming units). This is less sensitive than the laboratory test for SARS‐CoV‐2 based on Reverse Transcriptase Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT‐qPCR), however the test is less expensive and requires very little training to perform.
Commentating on the test, a spokesperson from Holchem said: “We are delighted to be able to offer the COV‐Hygien Xpress On‐Site Detection Kit to our customers across all sectors. It provides a rapid and relatively cheap method, not available until now, for detecting SARS-Cov-2 on surfaces. It is easy to use and no advanced level of technical training is required to use it. Following a positive test, surfaces should be immediately decontaminated and retested to prevent potential exposure to the SARS COv-2 virus.”
The kit is available in three different pack sizes:
- Trial Pack – Box of 5 tests – TEST0216
- Starter Pack – Box of 25 tests – TEST0217
- Eco Pack – Box of 18 x 25 tests – TEST0218
All orders should be placed with Engineering Sales (engineeringsales@kersia‐group.com), highlighting which unit size is required.
