Five essential rules for getting TV screens World Cup ready

11 June 2026

WITH THE FIFA World Cup now underway, pubs, bars, hotels, offices and fan zones across the UK are preparing for one of the busiest sporting events on the calendar.

While many businesses focus on food, drinks and promotions, ensuring TV screens are clean and properly maintained is equally important, says Safeguard Europe.

A dirty or damaged screen can reduce picture quality and spoil the viewing experience, while incorrect cleaning methods can cause permanent damage to expensive displays. Whether you're preparing a single television or multiple screens across a venue, following these five simple rules will help keep displays looking their best throughout the tournament.

1. Never spray cleaner directly onto the screen

One of the most common mistakes people make is spraying cleaning solution straight onto the screen surface. Although it may seem quicker, excess liquid can run down the display and seep into buttons, ports, vents or internal electronics. Even small amounts of moisture can cause corrosion, electrical faults or costly repairs.

Instead, apply the cleaning solution to a lint-free microfibre cloth first. The cloth should be lightly dampened rather than saturated.

This provides greater control and significantly reduces the risk of moisture damage.

2. Don't scrub stubborn marks

Busy hospitality environments often leave screens covered in fingerprints, dust, grease and smears.

When trying to remove stubborn marks, many people instinctively apply more pressure. However, excessive force can damage anti-glare coatings, create pressure marks on LCD panels and affect touchscreen performance.

A better approach is to use gentle circular movements and allow the cleaning solution to loosen the dirt. If marks remain, simply repeat the process rather than scrubbing harder. Taking a little extra time can help preserve the screen's finish and image quality.

3. Use only screen-safe cleaning products

Not all cleaning products are suitable for televisions and display screens. Products containing alcohol, ammonia or harsh solvents can gradually damage anti-glare coatings, protective films and specialist finishes found on many modern displays.

Repeated use of unsuitable products may leave screens looking dull, patchy or permanently marked, affecting both appearance and picture quality.

For best results, use a cleaner specifically designed for display technology. Undo Screen Cleaner, from Safeguard Europe, is an alcohol-free, water-based formulation developed to safely remove fingerprints, grease, dust and everyday grime from LCD, LED, OLED and touchscreen displays without damaging sensitive coatings.

Using a dedicated screen cleaner helps maintain picture quality while protecting valuable equipment throughout the tournament.

4. Use a clean microfibre cloth

The cloth you use is just as important as the cleaning solution.

Paper towels, kitchen roll and general cleaning cloths can leave fine scratches on display surfaces. While these may not be immediately visible, repeated cleaning with unsuitable materials can gradually reduce screen clarity and damage protective coatings.

A clean microfibre cloth is the safest option. It is specifically designed to lift dirt and fingerprints without scratching delicate surfaces.

It's also important to keep cloths clean. Any grit or debris trapped in the fibres can quickly damage a screen, so dedicated screen-cleaning cloths should be washed regularly and kept separate from general cleaning materials.

5. Turn screens off before cleaning

Before cleaning any television or display screen, switch it off and, where possible, disconnect it from the power supply.

A powered-down screen makes fingerprints, dust and smears much easier to see, helping achieve a more effective clean. It also reduces the risk of accidental button presses and minimises the chance of electrical issues if any moisture is present during cleaning.

After cleaning, allow the screen to dry fully before turning it back on. Taking a few extra moments to power down equipment can help protect valuable displays and ensure they are ready for every match.

Ready for kick-off

Large screens play a central role in creating a great World Cup viewing experience. Whether customers are gathering in a pub, hotel, workplace or fan zone, a clean, clear display helps ensure every match can be enjoyed at its best.

By following these five simple rules, businesses can protect their screens, maintain picture quality and create a better viewing experience throughout the tournament.
