Water savings soar at Celtic Manor Resort

01 March 2019

The multi award-winning Celtic Manor Resort in South Wales has adopted HSG’s Ureco washroom water conservation system to boost its environmental credentials and improve the visitor experience at its five-star facilities.

Celtic Manor, host venue for the 2010 Ryder Cup and the 2014 NATO Summit, is popular with business, leisure and golfing visitors alike. Set in more than 2,000 acres of panoramic parkland, the resort includes three hotels, a large convention centre, three spas and health clubs alongside three 18-hole championship golf courses.

Having been recognised with a host of awards for the quality of its facilities, Celtic Manor Resort was keen to reduce its water and repair bills and improve the washroom experience for visitors.

Discussions began with HSG about how the Ureco urinal sleeve and Uretech water management system could address these issues.

Urinal flushes reduced

The Ureco system, developed with patented technology by Derby-based HSG, has itself won a string of innovation and sustainability awards – including The Queen’s Award for Enterprise in Innovation in April 2018.

The Ureco stops smells by trapping urinal odours below the surface and reduces blockages through the patented enzyme system which breaks down the fat, acid and salt in urine. This enables the Uretech to reduce urinal flushes from around 96 times to just four times a day.

The HSG team surveyed the site and demonstrated that the Ureco system installation would cut water usage from nearly 11 million litres a year to just under 500,000 litres. This will result in reduced water costs from £63.63 a day to just £2.90 a day – amounting to an annual saving of £22,161. Further savings will also be achieved through reduced blockages leading to costly repairs.

Successful trial & installation

After a successful six week trial, the HSG team has now installed 117 Ureco urinal sleeves and 30 Uretech water management controls across the resort which will be supported by regular service checks.

Celtic Manor Resort energy and environmental manager Joel Kirby explained:  “We were keen to see the Ureco in action and undertook a very successful six-week trial in various men’s washrooms across the resort.

“The full installation has now been completed with minimal disruption. Training sessions on how to maintain the Ureco were also well received and appreciated by the cleaning and maintenance teams.

“The savings speak for themselves and there has been positive feedback from staff and customers about the improved washroom experience.”

Manor joins major venues

HSG managing director Simon Rice added: “We are obviously delighted to have Celtic Manor Resort on board.

“They join a portfolio of long-standing customers including the 02 Arena in London, NEC in Birmingham, major restaurant chains such as Pizza Hut as well as top football clubs and some of the largest retail shopping centres across the country.

“The Ureco system is particularly popular in the hospitality industry reflecting the recognition that customers often judge the cleanliness of the kitchens by the state of the washrooms.

“Therefore, as well as the cost savings in water consumption and cleaning products, our proven and patented technology therefore ensures that customers get a good first impression of the premises and further endorses their brand.  This contributes to increased customer satisfaction, loyalty and return spend.”
