Flushing and hand washing will use notable amounts of water, while lights may be left on permanently when the washroom is only occupied for only a fraction of time. But the biggest potential saving is said to be almost certainly in hand drying.

Jet Towel was developed in Japan in 1993 and works differently from a conventional hot air dryer. Instead of using heat to evaporate water from the hands it blasts the droplets off using a high speed blast of air.

Typically it takes 10 seconds for Jet Towel to do its work, compared to 30+ seconds for a hot air unit. Based on 200 uses a day a Jet Towel will consume 0.4kW of electrical energy, costing 0.04 a day, compared to 4.0kW and 0.40 for a standard dryer. This gives an energy saving of 3.6kW and a cost saving of 0.36, when comparing the new technology with the old.
