The solution for dilution
04 February 2015
Hydro Systems’ Alistair Blair-Davies talks about how innovation in dilution and chemical dispensing technology can lead to more efficient and happy operators, as well as better bottom line results
Operators in the UK’s commercial and industrial cleaning sector are continually looking for ways they can innovate to increase cleaning performance, while remaining cost effective. Many are recognising that through utilising modern automated dosing and dispensing systems, they can help optimise two of the greatest costs in the cleaning process – labour and chemicals – by using both more efficiently.
The main weakness with manual dosing systems is that they can only dispense a single chemical at a time and rely on the operator manually adding water to achieve the required chemical concentration. Sophisticated automatic systems on the other hand, incorporate venturis, which are directly connected to the water supply. Built-in selector valves allow multiple chemicals to be dispensed from the same unit, at different flow rates if required. This leads to a number of benefits when it comes to optimising the use of chemicals and labour.
Saving time & money
Accurate dilution is a crucial factor in improving cleaning efficiency. If chemical concentration is too high it can lead to surface damage. It also means chemicals are essentially being wasted, which can have a negative impact on bottom line results. On the other hand, if chemical concentration is too low, high standards of hygiene and cleanliness can’t be met. It may also mean cleaning procedures need to be repeated if they were not effective in the first instance, which leads to an operator’s time being wasted.
Modern dilution control systems incorporate flow and pressure control devices to ensure consistent and accurate dilution ratios. This means accurate dilution can be achieved consistently, so just the right amount of chemical is always being dispensed, leading to optimal use of chemicals and an operator’s time. Automated systems further reduce the operator time required, because redundant tasks such as mixing water and chemicals to achieve the required dilution aren’t necessary.
With automated dilution, safety is also improved, because an operator will rarely come into contact with the chemical concentrate and the risk of spills is also reduced. This can make it a much more pleasant experience for the operator, which leads to a happier workforce.
State-of the-art automated dosing and dispensing systems are capable of diluting multiple products at once, and offer features such as a choice of low and high flow dilution configurations, making them suitable for a range of applications. They are designed to clean any surface in a large number of environments, whether it’s a school, commercial kitchen or hospital.
The ability of the leading technology providers in the cleaning and hygiene sector to develop increasingly innovative products suitable for such a broad range of environments is clearly good news for both chemical companies and equipment users.
Automatic chemical dispensing systems save operator time, eliminate waste and ensure a consistently high standard of hygiene and cleanliness, regardless of the application. Along with reducing operating expenses, the relative cost of automated systems has progressively reduced in recent years. Now even the most advanced dispensing systems are a viable option for even small users. A relatively modest investment in an automatic chemical dispensing system will bring users a greater return on investment, while leading to better overall cleaning performance and improved overall efficiency.
