ASSIST FM joins British Cleaning Council
29 October 2026
THE BRITISH Cleaning Council (BCC) has welcomed ASSIST FM as its latest member, strengthening representation for the UK’s £72bn cleaning, hygiene and waste sector.

There is considerable synergy between the BCC and ASSIST FM and the move will support the BCC’s role as the voice of the UK’s £72bn cleaning, hygiene and waste sector.
ASSIST FM is a non-profit association representing facilities management services across all 32 Scottish local authorities, so it has an extensive Scottish network.
It promotes good practice, service improvement and professional development and is committed to supporting the people who deliver essential public services and keep buildings and services running for local communities.
In 2024, ASSIST FM worked with BCC member the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc) to establish a cleaning scholarship, creating development opportunities for future leaders in local authority cleaning services.
Beyond training, ASSIST FM’s Cleaning with Class group helps council members share good practice, understand legislative implications and explore innovations, technology and new methods.
David Garcia, chair of the BCC, said: “We warmly welcome our newest member. Together, ASSIST FM and the BCC have an even stronger platform to champion cleaning professionals in Scotland and across the UK.
“Like cleaning teams across the sector, ASSIST FM’s cleaning staff play a vital role keeping people safe and well and contributing to the nation’s health and wealth, often without receiving the recognition their skill and commitment deserve.
“Through stronger Scottish representation, we can make that contribution more visible and bring more frontline experience into the wider conversation about the UK sector’s future.
“Our shared priorities include developing skills, supporting recruitment, improving standards and ensuring cleaning is recognised as essential work, so there is considerable synergy.
“ASSIST FM also brings knowledge, relationships and practical achievements which will greatly help us in our drive to achieve our aims.
“Its work in the cleaning sector has helped demonstrate the sector’s professionalism and highlights the potential for rewarding industry careers.
“The scholarship illustrates what partnerships can achieve and that collaborative approach fits naturally with the BCC’s belief in working together to advance the industry. We look forward to working together.”
Nicky Joiner, chair of ASSIST FM, said: “We’re delighted to join the British Cleaning Council and excited by the opportunity to give Scotland’s local authority cleaning services a stronger voice.
“Through our Cleaning with Class sub-group and cleaning scholarship programme, we’re proud to share our experience and eager to learn from fellow members. Together, we can raise standards, develop skills and champion the essential contribution of cleaning teams.”
