Compacts all waste & moves bins

07 November 2014

Individual mobile compactors are used at 18 of the 19 recycling centres operated by NEWS in Norfolk but at its Thetford site, a new split level design required a different approach.

The team at NEWS invited waste compactor specialists Compact & Bale to review the Thetford site’s operation. The recycling centre was designed so residents could deposit materials into the containers below from the upper level. To ensure the containers were fully loaded to keep transport costs down, an efficient method of compaction was needed. Packmat’s mobile roll compactor model PK421 offered the solution.

The Packmat was also chosen to save money on potential damage and due to its twin motor design, it is able to 'back-hoe' waste in the containers to ensure even filling and level loads.

The machine compacts all waste types quickly and efficiently at ratios up to 80%, performing the function of a number of traditional static or portable waste compactors. It offers the additional versatility and benefits of being able to move full containers out of the way (weight up to 10 tonnes) by forks equipped with rollers, and move empty containers in their place without the use of a hook-lift vehicle. As a result, there’s no need for drivers to be HGV trained, and money can be saved on transportation which also helps to save the environment.

NEWS assistant manager Craig Leggett said: "The Packmat PK421 we purchased from Compact & Bale has exceeded expectations. It’s easy to operate and has unrivalled compaction abilities. We are now able to compact every waste stream from cardboard, green waste, timber, residual waste, to metal and rubble."
