Premier Inn leverages robots for cleaning amid rising costs
17 January 2025
WHITBREAD, THE parent company of Premier Inn and Beefeater, is adopting robot vacuum technology to automate room cleaning as part of a £50million cost-saving initiative.

This move comes after the Autumn Budget, which analysts estimate will add £70m to the company’s expenses due to rising employment costs linked to policies outlined by Rachel Reeves.
The use of robotic cleaners, already trialed before the Budget announcement, is designed to optimise staff efficiency, allowing housekeeping teams to focus on other tasks. Premire Inn's chief executive Dominic Paul emphasised that these innovations are part of broader efforts to manage inflationary pressures and streamline operations, which include a £500m strategy to convert restaurant spaces into hotel rooms, aiming for a total of 97,000 rooms.
Whitbread has projected 2-3% cost inflation across its portfolio after factoring in its cost-control measures. While UK quarterly sales dropped by 4%, growth in the German market remains robust, with sales climbing over 30%. The company remains optimistic about its performance, citing strong brand equity and strategic initiatives to outpace competitors despite challenging market conditions.
The adoption of automation and other efficiency measures reflects a growing trend in the hospitality sector to balance rising operational costs while maintaining high service standards.
