Fighting COVID-19 with lighting technology
25 September 2020
THE LATEST innovation to tackle the global outbreak of coronavirus, LED Direct has launched the Purelight Flow UV-C. The technology uses wavelengths of 253.7 nm and allows for an effective disinfection effect to help combat the spread of the disease.
The UV-C radiation disinfects the air and surfaces in the room, by penetrating cells and breaking down the microorganisms and RNA of viruses like COVID-19.
As a result, the microorganisms become inactive as the radiation distorts their genetic material and renders them incapable of reproducing. The lighting covers walls, worktops, and objects while reaching every nook and corner in the form of reflected rays.
Purelight Flow devices provide effective disinfection by combining a flow luminaire and an external radiator, delivering smooth, uninterrupted operation. In line with the device's carbon filter, they can eliminate bacteria, mites, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms. They ensure the cleanest and freshest air by putting safety first.
A spokesperson for LED Direct said: "We are very excited to be launching this groundbreaking air sanitiser product. The outbreak of coronavirus has caused businesses worldwide to adapt and change, and our launch of UV-C technology to the UK market is the latest in those innovations. The Purelight Flow devices are fantastic commercial solutions, and we hope industries such as hospitality, beauty and hair salons, schools, manufacturers, and offices can all experience the benefits in creating a safer, cleaner world."
UV-C luminaires are one of the most effective methods of air and surface disinfection. Research from Boston University's National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories (NEIDL) has confirmed that UV-C light sources are effective methods in the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2, the virus causing COVID-19. Their tests showed that the UV-C light reduced 99% of the SARS-CoV-2 in 6 seconds when applying a 5mJ/cm2 dose.
The Purelight Flow comes in two versions; the Standard Flow and Hybrid.
The Standard Flow has the UV-C tubes contained in an internal chamber, through which the device pushes the airflow to sanitise the air. It provides continuous air disinfection on low power consumption, making them highly efficient. This device can be in use at all times in offices, schools, and hospitals with high volumes of foot traffic.
Meanwhile, the Hybrid uses a direct light source, sanitising both the surfaces and air. However, it can only be switched on when there are no people present.
For contained spaces like lifts and public transport, which have periods of vacancy, the Hybrid device is highly effective. The Purelight range is manageable through a mobile application, using a wireless door opening detector to switch off the Hybrid Purelight Flow and ensure the longest possible operating time.
