Latest issues to be addressed at ‘The Health & Safety Event'

16 January 2014

The Health and Safety Event, a new national Health and Safety exhibition and conference programme organised by Western Business Exhibitions, will take place at the NEC in Birmingham from 11th to 13th March 2014.

The event is co-located with exhibitions including MAINTEC 2014 and Facilities Management 2014. The event aims to meet the needs of those visitors that have been visiting the NEC on an annual basis to get their health and safety information, as well as giving visitors to MAINTEC and Facilities Management the opportunity to expand the range of products they can evaluate, experts that they can speak to and seminars they can attend.

Education is a major theme for the event and the seminars organised by The British Safety Council will address the very latest challenges in the safety sector. Opening the three-day conference is the seminar entitled ‘Recent Developments in Health and Safety Regulation - Changes and Challenges’ delivered by Jane Willis, director of Cross-cutting Interventions, Health & Safety Executive. The presentation will give an overview of the many developments in health and safety regulation and its enforcement in the UK following a number of different reviews since 2010, with a key focus on the recently published Triennial review. It will consider the impact and challenges of these changes for both the regulator and the regulated and also outline what these are likely to mean for future regulation.

Providing an insight into how large manufacturing businesses handle their safety requirement is John Holt, director HS&E at Rolls-Royce plc with his seminar entitled ‘Delivering health and safety in a global power systems business’. His presentation will consist of an introduction to Rolls-Royce, its health and safety challenges, strategies that can respond to a changing business and the role of the health and safety function in supporting global improvements.

On day three of the event, giving visitors an overview of the challenges and opportunities resulting from the massive Crossrail project is the health & safety director at Crossrail, Steve Hails. Entitled ‘Crossrail – The Challenges and Opportunities’, Steve’s presentation will include detailed information on the project such as: the facts and stats, the role/profile of the team, the sheer scale and technical challenge of the project, philosophy, solutions and innovations, working with contractors etc. Additionally the presentation will also look at the changing role of health and safety as the project progresses while leaving a lasting legacy.

Commenting on the conference seminars Neal Stone, Policy and Communications Director, British Safety Council, said "In putting together the conference programme we have made sure that topics covered are the ones at the forefront of the minds of those involved in health and safety and environmental management and that the speakers are leading experts in their respective fields. The topics include the reform of health and safety law, HSE’s ‘Fee for Intervention scheme, health and well-being to risks associated with work-related driving and the environment. Don’t miss this, the premier annual health and safety and environmental management ‘free-to-attend’ conference in the Midlands. I look forward to seeing you there.”

As well as the British Safety Council conference programme there are other, more practical, seminars taking place across the event. Visitors will be able to see vendors and event partners such as Dupont Personal Protection and NQA host practical seminars.

Furthermore, giving visitors the chance to expand their knowledge, network with their local Safety Groups and also give them the opportunity to volunteer to become a Health Risks at Work Champion will be the Health Risks at Work and their Champions Workshop running throughout the event.

Along with event partners, Ansell, Arco, DuPont and NQA and title sponsor 3M, the Health & Safety events are supported by the British Safety Council and officially endorsed by the International Institute of Risk & Safety Management (IIRSM).

The full timetable of the conference programme for the three-day event is now up on the event website. To register online please visit www.healthandsafetyevents.co.uk
