Electrolux Professional Laundry's Abecs recently won the Innovation Award at the AHCP conference. The concept controls the spread of bacteria on surfaces and microfibre cleaning cloths.

It works by physical attachment of bacteria to the microfibre that is processed within abecs. Micro-organisms and bacteria are attracted to the positively charged fibres by their negative charge. The positive charge is automatically imparted into tiny microfibres.

Abecs does not damage fabrics or affect the health of cleaning staff. The risk of resistance building is also significantly lower than with chemicals. The concept claims to double the lifetime of microfibre mops and cloths compared with when using oxidising agents. They can be laundered at lower temperatures with no need to tumble dry.

With no need to prepare detergents and no drying, for a 42 ward hospital operating two cleaning shifts a day annually, the company claims savings of 2555 hours and £17805 labour costs.
