When hygiene meets sustainability

12 June 2026

As expectations around hygiene, sustainability and workplace safety continue to rise, choosing the right floor-cleaning equipment has never been more important. Julian Stone explains how innovative cleaning technology, long-term reliability and comprehensive after-sales support are helping organisations across healthcare, education, hospitality and industry achieve exceptional cleaning results while reducing environmental impact

ROTOWASH IS a specialist import, sales and service company with an exclusive UK wide agent’s territory for the Rotowash range of industrial floor cleaning machines. As such, our business comprises of two key elements; business-to-business sales and the service and maintenance of Rotowash machines.

The Rotowash story starts at Rotowash GmbH, a quality orientated family business located in Wagna, Southern Austria, where all of the manufacturing processes are undertaken with special attention being paid to sustainability and service quality. In particular, the introduction of solar powered energy ensures that all manufacturing processes are carried out without generating any greenhouse gas emissions.

Rotowash has been present on the international market since 1971. Its name has become a generic term, which is not due to chance but to exceptional performance. This guarantees efficiency and resilience. These qualities are valued across all market sectors where the demands for high standards of cleanliness and hygiene are ever present balanced against the mindfulness of their environmental footprint.

The Rotowash industrial floor cleaning machine is one of the most efficient and robust machines available in the UK. It is a premium product that has specifically been designed to tackle all types of flooring, which traditionally rotary cleaning machines often struggle with. The patented brush system can reach deep down into the irregularities of profiled floors such as grouted tiles, studded rubber, entrance matting or escalator steps and is equally effective for scrubbing and buffing flat surfaces such as vinyl, terrazzo and wood. On carpets the versatile brushes extract the dirt, lift the pile and leave the carpet clean, well-groomed and dry within minutes.

Sustainability and environmental responsibility

Safeguarding the environment for future generations is everyone’s responsibility and this is something that we at Rotowash are keen to play are part in. Thanks to its unique design features, the Rotowash machines are designed to use up to 90% less water and chemicals than used in conventional cleaning machines. This positions the Rotowash as an environmentally responsible option for businesses.

Benefits of Rotowash are enjoyed across our diverse client base, which includes customers from the NHS, care homes, schools, leisure centres, retail malls, hotels, restaurants, public houses, offices, warehouses, distribution centres, manufacturing plants and breweries. Indeed, any premises that has a floor that needs cleaning, could use a Rotowash.

At Rotowash, we fully understand the difficult jobs that cleaners are asked to perform. Not only is cleaning physically taxing but it can be very frustrating when you are given a machine that is just not suitable for the job in hand. We believe that using a Rotowash is definitely one of the answers to these problems. Not only is it an extremely versatile machine, which is easy to use but it has been designed specifically to minimise musculoskeletal impacts and any subsequent disorders.

Training, health and safety

Health and safety is a key focus within our business so we are particularly keen to ensure that anyone who uses a Rotowash can do so without putting themselves at any unnecessary risks. To further endorse this principle, we also offer free training to all Rotowash operatives for the lifetime of the machine. This means that any new user can be properly trained to both use and maintain our machines, which effectively safeguards them and as importantly protects the longevity of the machines our clients have purchased.

As an SSIP-accredited SafeContractor, we operate to the highest safety benchmarks, making Rotowash a dependable partner in regulated care environments.

At Rotowash, selling a client a machine is only the start of the customer relationship. It is vitally important that we put in place a process that looks after the customers’ asset and we do this through our Service Department. Our comprehensive after-sales support team, manned by a dedicated network of engineers, service items so as to minimise downtime with minimal disruption to the client’s workflow or business. With the Preventative Maintenance Agreement (PMA), which operates on a rolling twelve-month basis, clients are also covered for call out and labour costs in the event of emergency repairs. Not only that, but the PMA provides a managed maintenance programme with planned service visits carried out on a five-month cycle.

While this is one of our greatest strengths, it does have a downside – machines that are regularly serviced and looked after will last for over twenty years. This is of course a fantastic testament to one of the benefits of the Rotowash machine but it does mean that we cannot go back and sell our customers a new machine every couple of years! Our machines are built to last and we are so confident in this fact that we provide a three-year manufacturer guarantee with every new machine sold.

Looking specifically at the Rotowash machines, we provide versatility by offering either corded or battery-operated models. These come as either single pass or dual pass machines. The single pass floor cleaning machine is especially useful in larger areas such as in sports halls, long corridors or shopping centres. Coupled with this, our single pass machines have unique manoeuvrability making them equally as efficient for smaller business with confined areas. The single pass machine includes an integrated electrical spray unit for demand-controlled water dosing and spraying a mist in front of the leading brush.

Our battery powered machine falls within the single pass range. It comes with all the tried and tested features of our cabled machine whilst adding health and safety, convenience and flexibility advantages.

Escalator and travelator cleaning machines

Within the single pass range, we provide machines designed for escalators and travelators. These machines provide the gold standard when cleaning these areas but like the rest of our range are extremely adaptable. By using standard brushes, these machines will also clean and dry entrance matting, carpets and slip resistant floors, ensuring clean and slip-free surfaces in high footfall areas.

Maximum hygiene

In contrast, the dual pass floor cleaning machine is designed to provide maximum levels of hygiene by deep cleaning floor surfaces. These machines are best suited to the healthcare sector, where the requirements for exceptional results are paramount. The dual pass machine utilises a purely mechanical water dosing system, which ensures the liquid distribution is between the brushes.

Regardless of whether the Rotowash is constructed as single pass or dual pass, the size of the machines is consistent across both applications. Determined by the width of the brushes, our machines are available in five differing sizes ranging from the M60BXL for large areas to the compact M20S for small spaces. The models in-between are designed to suit all of our clients’ needs.

Brushes and accessories

In the fight against cross contamination and infection control, we provide a range of colour coded brushes available in red, yellow, green and blue. These brushes are easily interchangeable, without the need of any tools and so ensure that just one machine can be used across multiple areas to prevent cross contamination. More specialised heavy duty or abrasive brushes are also available as are polishing brushes. A side kit or corner kit designed to clean right up to skirting boards, around corners, door frames and under furniture can also be provided.
