Raising the standard in window cleaning safety
05 September 2025
SINCE 1997 safety has always been at the heart of Ionic's Reach & Wash pure water window cleaning technology.

From 1999, Ionic’s waterfed poles featured insulated glass fibre handles. Later, in 2017, the company introduced the Protector Handle conforming to BS802:2011 to protect operatives from the risks of electrocution overhead power lines and other electrical risks. Now Ionic has announced the next step in safety: the new Dual-Protector Waterfed Pole – independently tested with 100Kv (100,000 volts). By adding a second BS8020 compliant section the company is effectively increasing the safe working distance, thereby protecting operators from unobserved hazards, those missed by risk assessment. (Testing with 100Kv exceeds the 10Kv required to meet BS8020).
Ionic’s range of carbon fibre waterfed poles are proven safe to 50Kv whilst the glass fibre range are proven safe to 80Kv. Ever since the very first all-aluminium waterfed poles of the last century, the industry has been well aware of the risk of electrocution, opting to simple apply a warning label in order to shift responsibility onto the user. Even though there have been many fatalities in the USA and even two in the UK in 2022, it wasn’t until 2024 when Jason Knight ,a family man actually survived a strike from a 33Kv overhead powerline when using his waterfed pole, that the industry began to take the matter seriously.
Jason Knight, a professional window cleaner who suffered life-changing injuries has campaigned for change within the industry, appealed to his local MP who having heard submissions from both Jason and Craig Mawlam, Ionic’s chairman, has received responses from both HSE and BSi. At this stage it is clear that any move toward change from on high is likely to take some years to evolve and be implemented. In the meantime, safety conscious building owners, FM, cleaning and window companies can rely on Ionic Systems and the Reach & Wash System, the safest system!
