Dust off your soft furnishings

Most soft furnishings are left far too long between necessary, periodic cleans, explains Pilgrim Payne. Many people will probably vacuum clean their carpets and rugs on a weekly basis and attend to upholstery maybe monthly. But how often do people attend to regular cleaning of their curtains and draperies?
Most people, it may shock you to know, thoroughly vacuum the curtains and draperies less than once a year! The only way to see just how soiled things are is to get up to inspect the tops of the curtains or alternatively, take the curtains down to inspect them. When this is done most people get quite a shock at the level of dust and dirt that exists on and in their valuable soft furnishings and often, due to lack of regular care, the only way to get things back to a good standard of cleanliness is to call a specialist cleaning company to carry out the essential works.
Soft furnishings can look relatively clean but most of the time they are not. As the soiling process is gradual it is not that noticeable as it becomes more and more serious. A good way to check on the need for a thorough carpet clean is to moisten a clean white napkin or handkerchief and rub it across the doorway to a room, the results can be startling! That clean looking carpet has blackened the clean napkin or handkerchief. And remember the soiling is not just on the surface, it goes deep into the pile as well.
On your upholstery you can test the degree of soiling by stretching a slightly moistened white handkerchief across the flexible vacuum hose end of your cleaner and draw it across the arm or cushion of a sofa or armchair. If you can see dirt transferred then the item needs professional dry cleaning by a specialist furniture cleaning company, not a local garment cleaner. All this dirt and soil is not just unsightly, it is full of germs, allergens and colour damaging grit and dirt.
