Eco-friendly efforts make an impact

06 July 2015

Berendsen UK, a provider of textile and laundry services to the healthcare and hospitality sectors in the UK, has won the Green Impact award at the first ever Laundry and Dry Cleaning Awards (The LADA's).

This award recognises Berendsen UK’s ongoing environmental and sustainability commitment and excellence.

The LADAs recognise companies, individuals, services and products in the laundry and dry-cleaning industry that make positive contributions to society and technology.

Berendsen UK, the first recipient of the Green Impact award, has introduced a variety of environmentally friendly practices across its operations, which have enabled significant energy and water savings. Since 2008, Berendsen UK has reduced energy consumption (kWh) by 17 per cent and water usage by 37 per cent, equating to over one billion litres of water per year.

Berendsen UK’s pro-sustainability changes have included altering the washing process, requiring investment in accurate chemical dosing systems. This is achieved using an innovative rinsing process where the alkali detergent is chemically neutralised, significantly reducing water usage and increasing the disinfection properties of the process.

Further undertakings have included the installation of LED energy-saving lighting, the conversion to gas in sites previously using fuel oil, reducing the use of detergents and reviewing the process of disposal for these detergents. In addition, Berendsen UK has invested in changes to the water flows and heating systems in its continuous tunnel washers.
