Get back to sealing floors, says poll
30 August 2013
The healthcare cleaning industry should get back to sealing and polishing floors in the interests of hygiene, according to a new opinion poll.
The response was an overwhelming 63% response in favour of going back to these more traditional methods. Some 32% said it would make sense in certain areas such as operating theatres, while only 5% said it would not make a difference.
Brian Boll, systems director at Jigsaw Cleaning Systems, who ran the survey, said:"The superior method of cleaning floors by using Masslinn dust collecting cloths has changed the way high risk areas in hospitals are effectively cleaned of bacteria harbouring dust.
"By sealing the floor this ensures that dirt is prevented from entering and being engrained in the floor surface, therefore because the dirt is sitting on the seal and not in the floor, it is easier to remove during the cleaning operation and helps keep the floor in good order both visually and structurally for many years. Ultimately, we are talking about the hygiene and health of patients and those moving about in healthcare buildings.”The Department of Health has recently released figures which show that NHS spending on cleaning last year was up £40.7m to £937.9m. A new specification on cleaning in hospitals was published last year by the Department of Health, National Patient Safety Agency and the British Standards Institution.
