response company, alongside
Hampshire Fire and Rescue
Service, to assist with the
environmental clean up after a
major fire at a battery recycling
plant near Lasham Airfield in
Hampshire.
Seventy fire fighters spent several nights tackling the blaze, which involved approximately 300 tonnes of alkaline zinc chloride batteries and metal oxides, which led to a number of substantial explosions.
Hydro Cleansing was required to stop in excess of 200,000 litres, per 12 hour shift, of contaminated firewater. The major concern was to prevent firewater leaving the site and entering the environment, which could have had catastrophic effects on soil, trees, and river life.
The works carried out by Hydro Cleansing included containment, over pumping, high power vacuum recovery and transfer to road haulage vehicles for transport to a suitable treatment facility.
