Julius Rutherfoord formally agrees to be Living Wage leaders

04 July 2014

The Living Wage Foundation is pleased to announce the commitment that Julius Rutherfoord, London specialists in contract cleaning, has shown by now working together with them under their Recognised Service Provider programme.

Employees working at Julius Rutherfoord’s head office receive a minimum hourly London Living Wage Rate of £8.80 - significantly higher than the national minimum wage of £6.31.

The Living Wage is an hourly rate set independently and updated annually. The Living Wage is calculated according to the basic cost of living using the ‘Minimum Income Standard’ for the UK. The London rate is an additional higher rate, reflecting the inherent additional costs associated with living and working in London. Decisions about what to include in this standard are set by the public; it is a social consensus about what people need to make ends meet.

James Bennett, operations director from Julius Rutherfoord, said: "We are dedicated to the well-being of our staff, encouraging self-improvement through training, and rewarding hard work. We have committed to paying the London Living Wage rate to all our direct employees, as well as actively encouraging all clients to adopt this rate for the cleaners on their contracts. Julius Rutherfoord’s pledge to promote the Living Wage demonstrates our ongoing commitment to both our staff and the local community, whilst also reinforcing our stance as a socially responsible company."

Employers choose to pay the Living Wage on a voluntary basis. The Living Wage enjoys cross party support, with public backing from the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition.

Living Wage Foundation director Rhys Moore said: "We are delighted to welcome Julius Rutherfoord to the Living Wage movement through our Recognised Service Provider programme.

"The best employers are voluntarily signing up to pay the Living Wage now. The Living Wage is a robust calculation that reflects the real cost of living, rewarding a hard day’s work with a fair day’s pay.

The news comes hot on the heels of an announcement made on 23rd June 2014 that London-based CTS Cleaning Solutions has become the first ever cleaning company to be accredited as a Living Wage employer.
