Keeping an airport clean for millions of passengers can be challenging at the best of times, but at East Midlands Airport the huge growth in passenger numbers has prompted a strategic re-think by Blue Diamond Services, the onsite cleaning contractor. The company now has as much advance notification of peak passenger flows and predicted levels of terminal use as possible. Armed with this, it is able to organise cleaning tasks and plan how to use the cleaners time for maximum productivity. Having been given a free rein with regard to cleaning matters, the company has also developed a sophisticated programme that maximises productivity by empowering staff to clean something when it is dirty rather than because it has been decided that they should. The way in which cleaning staff are rotated has also been changed to save time, and increased training means they can perform numerous different tasks in the same location.
