Health and Safety 09 exhibition
December 1st 2008

Health and Safety 09 – South, sponsored by DuPont, is on the 24th and 25th of February 2009 at Sandown Park in Esher, Surrey. Cleaning Matters previews the event

Health and Safety 09 – South combines a high quality seminar programme; organised in 2009 by the new Official Educational Partner the British Safety Council (BSC), with an exhibition supported by the industry's major manufacturers and service providers. The seminar programme will focus upon 'health' as well as safety. "The epidemiology of health is a less straight forward issue than safety, as exposure is not as easy to predict as it takes place over the long-term,"says Nina Wrightson, chairman of the BSC."It is often ignored and we intend to tackle this problem." Seminar highlights on the first day, include 'Corporate Manslaughter/Homicide – The Impact'by Kevin Bridges of law firm Pinsent Masons LLP.The seminar will introduce the Act and the new statutory offence of corporate manslaughter/homicide for those that are unfamiliar with its content and its anticipated impact on corporate and personal liability. Bridges will also look at how the Sentencing Advisory Panel has suggested that those convicted under the act (which came into force on 6 April 2008, with the stated aim of making it easier to convict companies, and other large organisations, where serious management failures result in death), should face a substantive fine – between 2.5 and 10% of their annual turnover.

Seminars on the second day include 'Working at Height'by David Thomas of structural engineering company William Hare.Thomas will cover all aspects of safety when working at heights; including managing and selecting equipment for work at height and outlining some of the fundamental measures required for a safe system of work as required by The Work at Height Regulations 2005.

Also taking place on the second day is a seminar entitled 'Shattered Lives: A STEP in the right direction' from Mark Thomas of the Health and Safety Executive.Thomas'presentation will demonstrate the new, Slips and Trips eLearning Package (STEP) – the latest addition to the HSE's range of guidance and materials available under the 'Shattered Lives' Campaign.Thomas will also talk about the second phase of the campaign – promoting action in the workplace to address the risks of slips, trips and falls from height. The interactive eLearning package is one of the tools that will help employers take effective action to tackle risks.

Over 100 exhibitors, representing the top brands in health and safety, are represented.

Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) is an area which is well represented with the show's main sponsor being DuPont, with Ansell Healthcare Europe and Aearo Technologies as event partners. PPE covered includes everything from specialist protective clothing and gloves, to eye wear, ear plugs, and Hi Vis garments. For preventing slips, trips and falls, visitors to the show will be able to find product solutions such as anti-slip flooring, spill control and spill containment.

Specialist equipment and advice for working at height solutions will also be available.

Health and Safety 09 – South provides visitors with a fantastic opportunity to talk to key industry bodies, professional and trade associations such as the Health & Safety Executive, the Asbestos Control and Abatement Division (ACAD) and the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH) and IOSH.
