Making smelly urinals a thing of the past
January 1st 2006

PHS Washrooms, a leading UK washroom service provider has launched the 'Sanisleeve' system that could make smelly urinals a thing of the past

It has been a long-standing problem for managers and owners of buildings with public or employee toilets that urinals are notoriously difficult to keep from smelling. That dilemma has led to the development of a plethora of products, most of which merely mask the malodours caused by urine, uric salt and sludge building up in urinal waste pipes. The solutions are often chemical based, contributing to environmental problems and even making malodours worse in the long term, without really tackling the root cause of the problem: blockages and foul gases caused by the build up of uric salts.

PHS Washrooms has been working on solving the problem outright and has launched the Sanisleeve as part of its established product range to improve the male washroom environment.

Ian Osborne, managing director of PHS Washrooms explained that the introduction of the PHS Sani-sleeve would change the standard that men would accept in their washrooms. He said: "Urinals, by their very nature, can be a major cause of unpleasant smells in washrooms and are embarrassing for both staff, visitors and customers alike.

The PHS Sani-sleeve tackles the problem at source and is already causing a stir among facilities managers.

They finally have a solution that really works and will bring an end to customer and client complaints about smelly urinals."

The PHS Sani-sleeve works by stopping urine from turning into uric salts, eliminating the cause of the smell and blockages. This device is inserted into the modified waste trap of the urinal and uses a patented 'odour lock' design combined with enzymes and friendly bacteria which consume the uric salts before they build up. The PHS Sani-sleeve is transforming men's washrooms up and down the country by ridding them of smelly urinals and stopping blockages from developing.

Kelvin Hall, technical director for supplier, Enviro-Fresh commented: "Something as basic as smells and blockages in urinals can negatively reflect on a company's image. The PHS Sani-sleeve offers a cost effective solution for eradicating foul odours from urinals, reducing blockages and generally driving up hygiene standards in washrooms.

Trials in offices, hotels, airports and pubs have shown that the PHS Sanisleeve is highly effective at removing the problem of urinal malodours, cutting expenditure on cleaning chemicals and reducing the problem of blocked pipes, even in the face of high volumes of usage."

The PHS Sani-sleeve is installed and maintained by PHS Washrooms, and is swapped out every three months with a replacement unit, ensuring the continued effectiveness of the enzymes and friendly bacteria in tackling the dual problems of blockages and unpleasant odours, with the added benefit of keeping the appearance of the urinal bowl looking fresh and new.

Coupled with the PHS Water Management System, the PHS Sani-sleeve actually functions better when less water and fewer chemicals are used in the urinal, saving hundreds of pounds each year for every urinal fitted with the system.

Nottingham East Midlands Airport (NEMA) had previously tried a host of products with the aim of reducing water consumption to the urinals before discovering the Sani-sleeve.

NEMA Terminal Engineering Manager David Howell explained: "The urinals were identified as the single largest user of water on the site. We wanted to reduce water use at the urinals without compromising hygiene and cleanliness. We set about trialling a number of products on the marketplace, water misers, chemical dosing systems and waterless urinals but none worked satisfactory, with any reduction in water flushing quickly leading to an increase in malodours and blockages.

"The Sani-sleeve system was different. We conducted a five-month pilot scheme during our busiest summer period when approximately three million passengers passed through the terminal. The installation of the Sani-sleeve throughout the terminal building has resulted in a significant reduction in urinal maintenance, an elimination of urinal malodours and a major cost saving of over £30 000 per annum. We are delighted with the product." use the enquiry bar:
