No more ‘Bog standard’ toilets in Swindon schools July 1st 2005 Leading washroom hygiene specialist, Cannon, has chosen to support the ‘Bog Standard Campaign’ which aims to improve the standard of school toilets and highlight the importance of clean, accessible toilets for children and young people.
Pupils at two Swindon primary schools, who produced winning designs for futuristic toilets as part of the national ‘Bog Standard Campaign’, are now improving their own school toilets thanks to prize money from Cannon.
Cannon got behind a local school design competition being led by Julia Drown, the then MP for South Swindon. Back in November 2004 pupils were asked to design toilets for their school and come up with innovative ideas for the loo of the future. The winners, Wroughton Infant School and Shaw Ridge Primary School, were announced last month, and Cannon donated £200 in prize money.
Many children avoid using school toilets because they are dirty, smelly, not private enough, or frequented by bullies and smokers. If children do not go to the toilet when they need to it can lead to serious health problems.
Oliver Weisflog, managing director of Cannon, said: “We wish the organisers of the Bog Standard Campaign every success with this important initiative, and with confidence we look forward to another opportunity to support the campaign in the future.
“Cannon is committed to working with the local community to bring about improvements, and when a member of the South West team highlighted this initiative we were delighted to put forward the prize money.” The creators of the winning designs were each awarded certificates at a special assembly at Shaw Ridge Primary on 22nd March, and both schools received a cheque for £100. More than 120 pupils and parents attended, the children were given a short talk about the campaign by Julia Drown before being presented the prizes by Philip Kent, regional director for Cannon.
The Bog Standard Campaign is organised by ERIC (Education and Resources for Improving Childhood Continence) a national charity that provides information and support on childhood bedwetting, daytime wetting, soiling and constipation to families and health professionals.
The Bog Standard Campaign was developed in partnership with the Community Practitioners’ and Health Visitors’Association, Schools council UK and the British Toilet Association and was launched in October 2004. More articles from Cannon Hygiene Ltd: |
