Global Hand Washing Day to prevent disease October 1st 2008 The first-ever Global Handwashing Day was on the 15 October
2008. It aimed to highlight the need for proper hygiene practices
across the world and raise awareness that hand washing with
soap is a powerful public health intervention.Millions of children
across 20 countries and 5 continents participated in educational
activities to raise awareness and promote behaviour change to
accelerate the hand washing habit for a
healthier future. Diarrhoea kills over 2
million children annually,making it the
second leading cause of death in children.
Simple hand washing with soap can
prevent this and other diseases such as eye
infections, stomach worms, SARS, and AVIAN
flu, that impact families in developing
countries.
The Global Hand Washing Day campaign
includes support from UNICEF; USAID,
Centres for Disease Control and Prevention;
Water and Sanitation Program, and states,"When coupled with
educational initiatives, hand washing with soap is one of the
world's most cost-effective preventative health intervention."
The basics needed to make hand washing a habit, particularly in
children, are: readily available and easy to use soap, continuous
encouragement of regular and thorough cleaning, soap that is
gentle to the skin and easy to rinse off and soap that is cost
effective.
