Soft and caring towels wipe wetness away with a smile
October 1st 2008

In environments that use a lot of wipes, efficiency is always a requirement, but what about comfort? Lotus Professional has launched a new range of soft hand towels specially designed for the NHS, alongside supplying dispensing systems to Sheffield

The new Lotus Professional soft hand towel range is the latest offering to be included in the National Health Service (NHS) Supply Chain catalogue. The softer towels made from 100% tissue will help to make hand washing a more comforting experience for all. With a proven record in supplying hygienic washroom solutions for the NHS for over 20 years, Lotus Professional has a good understanding of the demands that products supplied to the NHS must meet.

Health workers and patients require strong and soft hand towels that help users to dry their hands quickly and efficiently following hand washing. Hand drying is one of the single most important, yet often overlooked, measures in reducing the risk of cross-infection in the healthcare environment.

Wet hands collect and transmit bacteria more easily than dry hands and the drying process plays an important part in trapping microbes as a result of friction removal.

Smile if you're green Hygiene is paramount in the NHS but as a public sector organisation, it also has a responsibility in terms of green procurement. The new range of soft Hand Towels are part of Lotus Professional's 'Smile' range that contains products made from 100% UK and Ireland recovered fibre, manufactured in the UK. No virgin pulp is used in any 'Smile'products and as the paper is sourced from the UK, the distance travelled for manufacture is greatly minimised.

By using the new Lotus Professional soft tissue Hand Towel,NHS patients and medical professionals will be reducing their carbon footprint as well as being kind to their hands.

"We are delighted to be supplying an ever increasing number of products to the NHS," says Emma Nourry, trade marketing manager Lotus Professional."The SmartOne toilet tissue dispensers have already been very popular in NHS hospitals and we are pleased to now be including our softer tissue hand towels in our offering." Lotus Professional had previously supplied its SmartOne system to Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (STHFT) in order to improve hygiene levels and rejuvenate the appearance of its washrooms. STHFT wanted its toilet tissue dispensers to be hygienic and have a modern, uniform feel throughout all hospital departments. However, alongside the need to improve hygiene, the hospital also recognised the need to reduce waste and make procurement more cost effective.

STHFT was concerned by the amount of paper that seemed to be wasted with tissue being left on the floor in washrooms. This made the routine task of cleaning the facilities more difficult and time consuming for the domestic services employees. The issue led to increased costs and made the washrooms less sanitary as the excess paper strewn on the floor made cross-contamination a possibility.

"Following a visit to the NHS Infection Control Conference,we were really impressed with SmartOne; how it looked, its controlled dispensing and fully enclosed system. We have now installed 2,400 SmartOne dispensers throughout the hospitals and are planning to fit more in the future,"says Jackie Morris, head of domestic services and residences.

SmartOne is a solution for high traffic washrooms as its design means users only touch the sheet taken, which helps to greatly reduce cross-contamination.The enclosed roll means that less tissue is pilfered or wasted, further improving levels of hygiene, as tissue is not dropped on the floor.

The single sheet dispensing reduces consumption, leading to a more environmentally friendly washroom as the controlled delivery of tissue eliminates accidental dispensing. SmartOne's self-presenting mechanism also makes it easy to use, as the tissue is immediately visible and accessible. It also has a sealed structure, so objects such as hypodermic needles cannot be lodged inside its casing, preventing needle-stick issues, particularly in Outpatient departments.
