Can losing paper make savings?
October 1st 2008

Mike Burton of Albany Washroom Services – supplier of Dyson Airblades – says that with energy costs rising, now is the time to make savings. Burton believes one way of cutting costs in washrooms is by eliminating paper towels

With energy prices spiralling, the need for businesses to make cost savings is becoming ever more important.

Wholesale energy prices have increased by 50% since February this year, inflation busting water price increases could be on the way and the cost of paper has shot up by more than 10%, claims Mike Burton, MD of Albany Washroom Services.

He says more and more companies are now looking to their washrooms to make savings. "We recently advised Allport, a large freight forwarding company, on how they could make annual cost savings of more than £8,000 simply by installing Dyson Airblade hand dryers in place of paper towels.

" Over five years Allport will make cost savings in excess of £30,000 based upon today's known costs and not making any allowance for imminent and future paper price increases." Albany had already provided a complete hygiene package to Allport's airfreight division in Southall,Middlesex, including service, maintenance and deep clean. The site includes a 24-hour warehouse so it was vital that the washrooms could withstand the high level of use without unsightly mess.

Steve McNally,Allport's facilities manager was looking for an innovative solution that was environmentally friendly and would save both time and money.

The paperless washroom Nine Dyson Airblades were installed providing huge environmental savings by eliminating paper hand towel deliveries and waste, using significantly less electricity and sending less waste to landfill.

"Using paper towels in washrooms is a thing of the past for us," says McNally. "Visitors comment very positively on the new dryers and staff love them. Installing the Airblades has saved us time and money and means we are also doing our bit for the environment." Burton adds,"Albany has made a major investment in its environmental practices and I am confident that we can provide customers with the best solutions. We offer a free consultation service and cost savings analysis so we can advise on the most cost effective and sustainable way forward".

Put to the test "We are passionate about promoting best practice so we commissioned an independent clinical hand drying study with leading microbiologist Dr Ron Cutler at the University of East London.

The study evaluated the new generation of air hand dryers such as the Dyson Airblade, traditional warm air dryers, cotton roller towels and recycled paper from a hygiene perspective.

" The findings showed that the new air dryers are by far the most effective.

"Our platinum rental service is the only comprehensive rental package on the market for the Airblade," claims Burton, "which means there is no initial outlay – useful for companies in the current economic climate." "We were delighted to be able to work with Allport and help them to make real cost savings."
