England team cleaned out by cleaners
June 30th 2010

Five cleaners have been jailed for three years after stealing items worth £7,000 from the England team players, including underwear, reported the Daily Mail. The thefts occurred at the five star Royal Bafokeng Sports Campus near Rustenburg in South Africa. Items stolen included team jerseys, underwear and money. Around £485 in cash was stolen, as well as a Fifa gold medal and several USA team strips which the players had been given after playing the Americans in their opening World Cup match.

The five suspects were arrested on Sunday and brought before magistrates before being convicted. All of the stolen items were found in the homes of the suspects. The defendents were all sentenced to either 6,000 rand fines or three years imprisonment. It was reported that as none of them could afford to pay the fine, they were all jailed.

The five thieves were employed as cleaning staff at the Bafokeng Sports Campus. The crimes are believed to have taken place between June 21 and June 25, as England prepared for their second-round match against Germany. It's not known which players were the victims of the thefts but all the items have now been returned to their rightful owners.
