Medirest and Nilfisk join forces at King’s College Hospital
March 2nd 2010

Medirest, the specialist healthcare division of Compass Group UK has been awarded a massive multi service contract at King’s College Hospital. The contract is worth £137m over seven years and will provide a full range of FM services at the 1000 bed hospital; including catering, cleaning, portering and retail outlets.

King’s College Hospital is one of London’s largest and busiest teaching hospitals and plays a key role in training medical, nursing and dental students from all over the world. "Nilfisk were involved at the start of the project, advising and trialling a mix of equipment to suit the hospital," says Anna Hallas, national domestic manager and infection control lead with Medirest. "Cleanliness is high on everyone’s list and we needed to ensure we had the best equipment to do the job." Successful trials resulted in Nilfisk supplying a range of cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaners, single disc polishers, scrubber dryers and carpet care equipment.

HEPA filtration vacuums are critical within sterile environments such as operating theatres and pharmacies. The Medirest team use the Nilfisk HDS 2000 vacuum cleaner which has a filtration standard of 99.85 % of 0.1 micron particles. Its claimed such high filtration levels ensure almost zero discharge into the controlled atmosphere. The contract incorporates a performance management element that requires Medirest to respond very quickly in instances of spoilage. As a result, the equipment specified is compact, transportable and strategically located throughout the hospital. Pedestrian, battery operated scrubber dryers cope well with hard floor surfaces while carpeted areas are spot cleaned in between scheduled cleaning with the MX 307 hot water carpet extractors.

Mobilisation of such a contract is colossal. Taking over responsibility from a competitor within a tight deadline with no drop in standards, is a tough call for even the most seasoned of operators. Medirest called on the Nilfisk team to support them at roll out. "We had fabulous support from the Nilfisk team," says Hallas. "They unpacked, assembled and trained our staff day and night. They simply mucked in with everyone else, part of the team."
