Championship street cleaning
June 25th 2009

Connaught is keeping the streets clean around the Wimbledon Championships from 22 June to 5 July as part of its contract with the London Borough of Wandsworth.

Andy Murray and Roger Federer might not notice, but as thousands of spectators make the journey from Southfields tube station to the All England Club the un-seeded doubles pair of Wandsworth and Connaught makes sure that the roads in the area are as pristine as the tennis courts.

During the Wimbledon fortnight Wandsworth and Connaught work around the clock to maintain Championship standards. Even though spectators can no longer set up camp on the pavement area in order to queue for tickets the Connaught team will be litter picking, street cleaning and emptying bins all day throughout the duration of the tournament.

In the first two days of Wimbledon 2009 nearly 90,000 spectators crowded into the All England Club and a vast majority of them arrive via Southfields tube on the District Line. The organisers expect 500,000 tennis fans will attend the Championships, potentially creating a lot of extra litter to collect.

“The All England Club fully supports the work that Connaught and Wandsworth do to keep the area in the best possible shape for the Championships," says Darren Frost, managing director for Connaught Environmental. "We lay on extra staff and vehicles to sweep the roads and pay particular attention to Southfields tube station, where people either get a shuttle bus or walk down Wimbledon Park Road. It’s a landmark event for Wandsworth, the UK and for Connaught and we’re proud to be a part of it.”
