November 24th 2008

The UN World Toilet Day was on November 19th this year and aimed to help the 2.5 billion people (40%) of the world's population without a toilet. Worldwide, the lack of water and sanitation causes 5,000 deaths every day.

WaterAid and Ecover have been in partnership for three years, and have joined forces in a promotion which will bring water and sanitation to rural communities in the Hintalo Wajerat area of rural Ethiopia. To raise awareness of the global sanitation crisis and to celebrate what it calls a 'humble, yet essential bathroom fixture', WaterAid is asking shoppers to show some appreciation for their loo, while at the same time helping those without a toilet.

Until the end of the year, Ecover are giving away free watercare packs to help customers do their bit at home. Packs can be ordered by visiting www.ecover.com/wateraid – this is also the online resource to find out more about the communities and people who will benefit from the partnership.

The partnership focuses on the Hitalo Wajaret area as only 22% of the population currently has access to safe water, and just 6% have access to adequate sanitation. This lack of safe water and sanitation means 17 out of every 100 children will die before they reach their fifth birthday. On completion of the WaterAid Ecover project, 14,570 people across 11 villages in the region will have access to safe water and effective sanitation.
