Tork's green credentials online
April 29th 2008

The environmental credentials of “green” tissue manufacturer SCA can now be accessed in full on the Tork UK website.

The Environment tab on the home page of www.tork.co.uk leads directly to a 10-page presentation on SCA’s sustainability policy and environmental record.

“An increasing number of customers are seeking to deal with companies that have a strong environmental policy,” said SCA’s Brian Parkinson. “SCA is the world’s greenest tissue manufacturer  - but these days it is not sufficient to make any environmental claims without providing hard evidence to back it up.

“The Environment section includes details of all our environmental achievements plus awards we have received and third-party recognition of our sustainability record.”

The Environment tab includes details of SCA’s policies on forestry, recycling, transport and waste disposal. It also lists the company’s sustainability credentials such as SCA’s inclusion in the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations for four years’ running.

“Every company has a responsibility to the environment, and an increasing number of organisations are working towards reducing their environmental footprint,” said Brian. “By including our credentials on our website we are making it easier for customers to see that they are dealing with one of the most sustainable companies on the globe.”

Environmental credentials of Tork manufacturer SCA:

• In January 2008, SCA featured in the list of the world’s 100 Most Sustainable Corporations for the fourth year running. Innovest is the research provider for the Global 100, which was initiated by Corporate Knights Inc.

• In June 2007, SCA was named the second greenest company in the world in the Green Leaders Global Top Ten, published by the Independent newspaper in conjunction with Ethical Investment Research Services. SCA was beaten only by Vestas Wind Systems, the world’s leading manufacturer of wind turbines.

• SCA scored the highest marks in the 2007 global review by WWF’s Global Forest Programme. The WWF Tissue Survey also ranked SCA Tissue Europe as the clear leader in the tissue category in 2005 and 2006.

• SCA is part of the FTSE4 Good Global Index which rates companies on environmental and social performance.

• ETHIBEL has added SCA to its sustainability index and register and has given the company an “A” grade for "industry leader".

• In 2004 SCA won the EU Clean Marine Award for its low-emission logistics policy.

• Tork tissue products are made from renewable raw materials, are biodegradable and many carry environmental labels such as the Nordic Swan and the Blue Angel.

• By 2006, 86 per cent of SCA Tissue Europe’s pulp and paper mills were certified according to EMAS or ISO 14001. The company’s ambition is to start certification of newly-acquired mills within one year of acquisition.

• SCA Tissue Europe’s Prudhoe Mill in Northumberland was singled out for an environmental management award in February 2008. And before that the company’s Flaggstaff paper mill in Arizona, North America, received the 2006 Water Reuse Customer of the Year award for its water conservation project.

• A growing number of customers are choosing Tork products because of SCA’s environmentally-friendly credentials. Companies listing environmental considerations among their reasons for choosing Tork include the new Wembley Stadium; the British Antarctica Survey; Scottish biodiesel plant Argent Energy and wind energy company Renewable Energy Systems.
