Canary Wharf cleaners demand more cash
May 29th 2007

Canary Wharf cleaners rallied outside the offices that they are paid too little to clean last week – calling for the banks to respect their right to earn a living wage of £7.20ph, as announced by Mayor of London.

None of the Carary Wharf banks or law firms are yet paying the London living wage and many are still not paying their cleaners sick pay, a pension or 28 days holiday, according to London Citizens and their union, Unite (T&G section), who backed the cleaners

Barclays (profit last year: £5.28bn) is the worst payer at the Wharf, with cleaners currently earning £6.40ph. Protesters presented the bank with a Golden Vacuum award for “sucking its cleaners dry”.
