FCSI for Winterhalter's 'Energy' concept
July 30th 2007

A new energy concept from Winterhalter which makes use of the steam that is usually lost in the dishwashing process has won the FCSI award for innovative new products at the Society's annual conference 2007.

The 'Energy' concept is available for Winterhalter's GS502 and GS515 pass through dishwashers and is designed to reduce energy consumption and running costs, while improving working conditions for staff.

The FCSI (Foodservice Consultants Society International) judges' criteria for award-winning products are their level of innovation and customer benefit.

The GS 502 Energy and GS 515 Energy were hailed as an "extraordinary design achievement", making a big impression by fulfilling both criteria at once: by reducing operating costs and improving working conditions 'Energy' delivers a new level in customer benefits.

In conventional warewashers waste steam escapes at the end of every cycle, when the hood is opened and clean dishes taken out. However, the GS 502 and GS 515 Energy models make use of this steam and convert it into energy.

The steam is extracted from the interior during the dishwashing process when the hood is closed. It is fed through an air/water heat exchange unit, which uses the steam to heat the cold water feed.

This built-in heat recovery is very significant in terms of energy consumption. So much so that it reduces the total connected load by 3kW - which equates to a saving of around £450 per year. Assuming an average service life of eight years for a machine, this can mean a saving of as much as £3,600 in operating costs at current energy prices.
