Getting stuck into gum December 20th 2005 “Chewing gum that is irresponsibly spat on to the street is a nuisance, an eyesore and costing taxpayers millions each year to clean up,” says Lib Dem London Assembly member and environment spokesman, Mike Tuffrey. “If we can get a man on the moon and a probe to mars, I’m sure we can find a way of producing gum that degrades.”
However, although Wrigley’s claims it invests around £5m annually researching biodegradable gum, no solution has yet been found. So while antilitter campaigns and efforts to change consumer behaviour may make some impact, there is a greater need than ever for solvents and gum-removal devices.
Prochem says its patented Bazooka gum removal machine is quick, effective – and allows the operator to do the job standing up, making it easier on the user.
