Newsnight revisted
October 1st 2005

A response to BBC Newsnight programme by Alan Matthews, Marketing Director, Tucker Pole Systems UK.

I think Andrew Lee's performance on the BBC Newsnight programme was exceedingly unfortunate. I cannot deny that we at Tucker Pole Systems UK were initially very upset by his comments and in many ways he handled it badly. However, the media are known to 'get a story', in any way they can, and Andrew is not the first to find himself cornered by an aggressive interviewer and then have what he said cleverly edited before broadcasting.

Andrew's subsequent press release from the NFMW&GC association said it all. I believe it was a brave response to his critics and one that was both honest and open. It is understandable that Andrew should support the large number of small, independent window cleaners that make up the bulk of the association membership. There is huge concern, from this quarter, that waterfed poles are a bridge too far from both a technical as well as financial viewpoint - a situation that that could not be further from the truth.

We believe the NFMW&GC have not embraced poles quickly enough. They are therefore sadly maligned when results can be spectacular even with "bird s.....". We are led to believe that things are about to change and we look forward to working with the NFMW&GC to paint a more realistic picture where poles and traditional methods can work successfully side by side.
