Free Asset Skills workshop to boost worker literacy June 1st 2007 Despite much work to boost literacy and numeracy in the cleaning industry, there remains a large percentage of workers who lack the necessary skills to perform optimally: Recent research has identified that a deficiency in adult literacy, language and numeracy (ALLaN) skills has a huge impact on an individuals work and everyday life.
In relation to the cleaning industry many operatives without these skills face a number of difficulties which can affect performance. Identified issues include: difficulty dealing with customers and following instructions, inflexibility, absenteeism and non-compliance with regulations such as COSHH and Health and safety, all of which have a direct impact on an organisations productivity and profitability.
Given the impact the cleaning industry has on all businesses and society as a whole it is important to increase investment into the skills base of this army of essential workers.Whilst many employers are keen to provide their staff with ALLaN training they are often left in the dark as to where to turn for help, support and advice To help address this Asset Skills has been looking at ways to compile this plethora of information into a quick and easy to use format. The information has been contextualised to make it meaningful and relevant to the cleaning industry.
On 12 July Asset Skills will be hosting a free workshop in London for employers within the industry which will enable delegates to leave fully armed with all the information needed to be able to set up an ALLaN Programme for the workplace as well signposting sources of information, support and funding.
