Dust extraction? Use your loaf
October 1st 2006

Baking giant, British Bakeries, is keeping its Birmingham plant clean and safe with a centralised dust extraction system from Nilfisk- Advance. The new equipment, along with regular cleaning and sanitation, is being managed by Initial Floodguard, a division of Rentokil Initial Facilities Services, which specialises in food manufacturing and processing plants. The fixed system has been installed to increase cleaning productivity in and around two flour silos.

Each of British Bakeries'modern facilities can produce over 8,000 loaves an hour, alongside products such as crumpets, fruit buns, rolls and croissants. Its brands are established household names, including Hovis,Mothers Pride and Nimble, which are supplied to leading supermarkets around the country.Compliance with all relevant health and safety legislation is a key priority for the company and Initial Foodguard's 35-strong team provides a round-the-clock cleaning and hygiene service throughout the factory and offices.

A tailor-made dust extraction system at British Bakeries incorporates a fixed IV 055 industrial vacuum cleaner from Nilfisk's heavy-duty I-vac range. The powerful unit has a 5.5kW side channel blower and is available with a choice of filters. It can be specified for Dust Class L applications and has an airflow of 165 litres per second without hose for effective dry pick up.The system's suction unit is connected via stainless steel pipework to inlet points in designated areas within the factory. Initial Floodguard's operatives simply plug a hose into the nearest point switch on. Flour particles are collected and pneumatically transported to a central hopper for disposal.
