Surface preparation gun
December 1st 2004

DNS Distribution has announced the launch of a portable new low-pressure cleaning system that offers substantial time and cost savings when removing graffiti, dirt and other blemishes from stone, brickwork and other substrates.

Developed and manufactured in the UK by DNS’s associate company patent development specialist LPP the DORIS surface restoration system has an innovative design that gives it performance characteristics similar to those of conventional shot blasting equipment. However, it operates at much lower air volumes and without the need for a pressure pot, so it requires less energy to run, yields significant reductions in operating costs and produces considerably less dust and noise.

The key to the DORIS system is that it uses the venturi principle to draw the cleaning medium down the line, rather than forcing it out with compressed air. While traditional sand blasting equipment might require air volumes of up to 350 cfm, the DORIS will operate at between 68 and 115 cfm. With a typical compressor, this can yield a potential saving of 30 to 35 gallons of diesel per day.

The DORIS gun weighs only 7kg so it reduces operator fatigue, and without a pressure pot the whole system is lightweight making it well suited for sites with weight or access restrictions. Its venturi system is not subject to any statutory requirement for annual pressure testing, so downtime costs can be minimised, and because the cleaning medium is drawn down the line under a vacuum, there are fewer safety risks: should the line rupture as a result of accidental damage, the vacuum would simply be lost and there would be no threat from escaping compressed air and abrasive materials.

The DORIS system can be used with all commonly used cleaning media such as Alublast, calcium silicate, kiln dried sand and glass grit. It also features an in-built water spray that can be used as a low pressure cleaner, to wash down recently treated surfaces and to suppress the production of dust while masonry is being cleaned.
