Cost neutral microfibre provider
April 1st 2008

A move to Vileda Professional's Swep microfibre flat mopping system is playing a part in a successful hospital acquired infection policy at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust

According to figures released by the Health Protection Agency in January, in the six months to September 2007 there was a 24 per cent fall in the number of cases of MRSA at Royal Cornwall – from 29 to 22.There was an equally impressive performance on clostridium difficile (C.diff ), where reported cases fell by 37 per cent.

"We heard about microfibres at various conferences," says Stephen Rogers from Royal Cornwall's Domestic Services' team.

"The evidence seemed to stack up so we replaced all our traditional dolly mops with microfibre. As well as an improved cleaning performance we found them ergonomically beneficial. Equally important our staff are generally very pleased with their new mopping system.

Another plus factor is that the move has been largely cost neutral." The Swep Microfibre system is designed to fulfil all cleaning requirements with each system comprising a frame, handle and easy to change, pre-prepared microfibre flat mop head for damp mopping that carries a 1000 wash guarantee.

The ultrafine microfibres in the SWEP system clean at a microscopic level, penetrating surfaces at a finer level than normal fibres. When used damp they work by capillary action to scrape, remove and absorb dirt from surfaces, leaving nothing behind but tiny water droplets, improving cleanliness and reducing the risk of cross-contamination.

The move to microfibres at the Royal Cornwall Hospital Trust started nine months ago and they will play a part in the 800 bed acute hospital's second phase deep clean, a process it will continue on a rolling basis to maintain and further improve high standards.
