An increasing requirement of facility managers is that mobile or
static equipment is not only safe but also adaptable and easy
to transport from site to site. Spandeck is a lightweight
aluminium walkway bridge,work platform and staging system in one
versatile unit.Manufactured by Instant Upright, Spandeck is available
in the UK from access equipment manufacturer and distributor Planet
Platforms. It's useful for
cleaning and
maintenance personnel
due to its reversible
design and double side
hooks, which enable it to
be used as a walkway or
side by side as staging.
Other attractive features
include integral
toeboards for a safe
walkway, and a non-slip,
self-draining surface.The
work platform can also
be integrated into
existing scaffolding to
give users a number of safe deck and walkway combinations.
The HSE's advice is to use work equipment to prevent falls where
work at height cannot be avoided, eg:
- by using an existing (950mm minimum height) parapet wall;
- erecting edge protection
- using a mobile elevating work platform (MEWP), or
- using a work-restraint system. Leading and trailing edge
protection is offered by Spandeck in the form of double guardrails
while trailing edge protection is provided by the trailing edge system.
Spandeck also offers the option of extensive mobile runs that are
created by linking together and unlocking the Spandeck Roofing
trolleys and pushing the unit to the desired location. Providing full
compliance where applicable,with BS6399 (part 1) 1996 and BS5395
(part 3) 1995, subject to detailed specification, Spandeck is
manufactured using procedures approved to ISO 9001.
Cleaning/maintenance functions that Spandeck is used for include
roof and gutter cleaning, window cleaning and access to areas with
vertical entry points such as the profiled roof of air conditioning
plants. Spandeck is also used for the internal cleaning of industrial
plants and premises where it is not possible to cease normal activity
