Health and Safety '10 South December 1st 2009 Lawrence Waterman and Nattasha Freeman will head up the free seminar programme
at Health and Safety '10 South. The programme is organised by the British Safety
Council and endorsed by IIRSM.CM previews what's in store for visitors this year
At 9.45am on Tuesday 23rd February 2010, Lawrence Waterman
will present a seminar entitled:'How the Construction Industry
is rising to the London 2012 challenge'. Perhaps the most high
profile figure in the safety sector,Waterman is the head of health and
safety for the 2012 Olympic Delivery Authority (ODA). He heads up
the health and safety team responsible for ensuring the well-being of
thousands of people who work on building the sporting arenas and
other infrastructure facilities necessary to deliver the London 2012
Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Supplying safety
Waterman's seminar will discuss how against the difficult
background of a complex site with a history of industrial
use; in the centre of an urban area in need of
regeneration; up against an immovable deadline and
close public scrutiny the ODA's supply chain is
delivering on time, on budget and with a clear, relentless
focus on health and safety. Already in the fifth year of
work on site and at the peak of site activity, this is an
opportunity to reflect on the health and safety
programme with the man at its head.
Another high profile figure, Nattasha Freeman
(pictured right) is the IOSH Immediate past president
and a member of the IOSH Council. Her seminar,'The
Sustainability of the Health Agenda', will discuss sickness
absence figures and highlight the most prevalent causes
of work-related sickness absence. She will also talk about;
presenteeism; barriers to return to work; the changing demographic
of the working population and suggestions on proactive intervention
and facilitating rehabilitation.
Freeman has been working in health, safety and environmental
management for 15 years, in areas including the railway, construction
and commercial sectors. Her roles have included health and safety
manager for the EPS (European Passenger Service better known as
Channel Tunnel), planning supervision on many retail and
entertainment projects and safety management at Chase Norton
Construction and pcm. Freeman is currently director for health and
safety at Phoenix Beard property consultants in Birmingham.
Risky business
Another major piece of news surrounding the 2010 regional safety
events is that they are now officially endorsed by the IIRSM
(International Institute of Risk and Safety Management).
"We exhibited at the northern event for the first time in 2009 and
found that many of the visitors who we spoke to
were keen to learn what membership of IIRSM
really means," explains Kelvin Soley, marketing
manager for the IIRSM, speaking about the official
endorsement."The steady stream of visitors came
from many different businesses of varying sizes
it proved a really worthwhile event and one
which we decided to make part of our strategic
approach going forward."
