More smiles all round with less mileage for nhs October 1st 2009 Georgia Pacific has announced
figures for its environmental
initiative, Smile – a programme
designed to help central and
local government agencies
procure disposable paper
hygiene products in a more
environmentally responsible way.
Products in the Smile range are
manufactured in the UK using
100% UK and Ireland recovered
fibre, aiming to set a benchmark
for best practise in the
procurement of disposable paper
hygiene products. Best practise
ensures a reduction in recycling
miles, UK landfill prevention and
a reduction in carbon footprint.
The new figures (taken from
the Road Haulage Association)
reveal that to exclusively deliver
these products to the NHS took
approximately 4,500l of diesel
over a total distance of 8,870
miles and produced 12,000kg of
carbon dioxide.
To deliver the same volume of
goods from mainland Europe
would have required products
travelling over 62,000 miles,
consuming 32,000l of diesel and
producing over 83,000kg of CO2.
"Initiatives such as Smile are
incredibly important in helping
the NHS reduce its carbon
footprint," says Tracey Yeadon,
marketing manager at the NHS
Supply Chain."NHS Supply Chain
is focused on saving over £1bn in
procurement costs over the next
ten years but the environmental
costs must not be ignored. We
applaud Georgia Pacific's
approach to reducing CO2." More articles from Georgia-Pacific GB Limited: |
