sustainability
South Ayrshire Council has
introduced new pioneering
facilities as part of its waste
strategy to promote recycling on
the go.Two 'node' recycling
centres have been placed in Ayr
High Street, enabling the public
to separate materials such as
glass or paper from rubbish that
would normally be sent to
landfill. Each unit holds more
than 3,000l of waste.
"The Council achieved the
second highest recycling rate in
Scotland over the past 12
months, recycling and
composting 43% of all materials,"
says Councillor Peter Convery of
South Ayrshire Council. "I am
confident that we can build upon
this success with the introduction
of the node systems."
The node is designed by
Taylor. "Sharpening the focus on
public place recycling is
fundamental to contribute
towards the National Waste
Strategy for Scotland, especially
the commitment to move
towards zero waste," says Dr
David Gillett, business
development director at Taylor.
"Most of us now diligently
separate our waste at home but
the ethos has not successfully
extended to our street scenes
where nearly 30m tonnes of litter
is collected year-on-year. Facilities
such as the node can help."
and also develop member
services to assist the cleaning
industry to become more
sustainable.
"As the global economy enters
recession, businesses are looking
for new strategies that will
enable future growth and
development," says Andrew
Large the CSSA chief executive.
"A sustainable development
strategy that places equal weight
on people, profit and planet will
enable cleaning businesses to
meet client needs and grow,
both in the short and long
terms."
The CSSA group will develop a
strategic agenda for 2009 and
beyond. It will focus on enabling
the cleaning supply chain to
supply sustainable cleaning
services to its clients, and on
campaigning to improve the
receptiveness of the client base
to sustainable services.
CSSA members are among the
leading providers of out-sourced
cleaning services to both
commercial and public sector
clients. CSSA members employ in
excess of 250,000 people. More articles from CSSA: |
