Tell the public where to stick it
December 1st 2007

A simple yet effective way of reducing gum litter is racking up plaudits from local councils across the UK.GumTarget is literally just that: a highly visible sticking post that tells the public exactly where to stick it

Invented by Meteora, the GumTarget encourages the public to stick their used gum in a place where it can easily be collected, contained, removed and disposed of hygienically, rather than being thrown on the floor where it awaits specialist, and therefore costly, removal services.

It consists of a backing board and a printed sheet, the GumSheet.

This covers the front of the GumTarget, providing an easily changed, disposable surface on which used gum is stuck. GumSheets are changed regularly to prevent the build-up of a large volume of gum deposits.GumSheets are printed with various entertaining/topical images or messages, the aim being to provide the public with 'a fun place to deface'.

GumTarget is strategically located in gum drop 'hot spots' and is wall mounted, freestanding or fitted to an existing post.

Not just a sticky place Awarded national runner up by the Chartered Institute of Wastes Management awards for Best Environmental Practice in its first year of service, the system has since become a key element in the fight against gum litter for over 40 public sector organisations across the UK. These vary from educational establishments to towns and city centres and include British heritage sites such as Windsor Castle.

For an idea of its impact,Meteora cites Luton Borough Council: During its first year of service within Luton it collected over 75,000 pieces of chewing gum. Several years later it is still collecting 1,000 pieces of chewing gum per week. Given that a single stick of chewing gum costs around 30 pence to remove, the annual savings would equate to over £15,000.
