Going the extra mile
February 1st 2008

A bit of extra sparkle is being added to Blackpool's Golden Mile following local council's investment in 12 Hako Citymaster street sweepers

Driver comfort and environmental factors were high on the agenda when Hako designed its Citymaster 2000.With a sweeping width of up to 2.5m and good visibility of the area being cleaned, the sweeper's two brushes can be controlled independently of each other, directly from the cockpit.

The comfortable cabin can seat two people and has heating with air conditioning available as an optional extra. The steering column and driver's seat are fully adjustable.

The sweeper has a high tipping hopper that is particularly easy to clean and empty. With additional winter maintenance options available, the machine ensures that municipal tasks can be performed all year round.

Citymaster is environmentally sympathetic and meets the Euro 4 Standard. Hako believes it is the only European cleaning machine manufacturer to have the EMAS accreditation, the increasingly influential Environmental Management and Audit Scheme.

Councillor Ian Fowler comments "The previous fleet was used every day for the past five-and-a-half years in hostile sea air conditions.

Wear and tear had resulted in higher maintenance costs so we needed a range of machines that could cope with the environment as well as a full support package. We chose the Citymaster 2000 as it is a robust machine that afforded additional benefits as well as an excellent service package that will reduce downtime for maintenance and any repairs with overnight turnaround on any spare parts required." To celebrate the introduction of the new fleet and to develop a positive message about litter and waste issues, Blackpool Council has launched a competition. Primary school pupils are asked to suggest a name for each sweeper and give a reason for their choice. They can also design a slogan or logo to combat litter in Blackpool.
