Getting rid of grime
April 1st 2009

CSB Environmental, Specialist Site Services, has just carried out a deep clean for Grimsby Town Centre, using its latest Lanceman Twin Hot / Cold Cleaning Unit and Operator Welfare, combined with the Lanceman Clean and Recycle

North East Lincolnshire council is keeping a tight maintenance schedule on cleaning and protecting street surfaces. When general grime became too much, it called in CSB Environmental Site Services.

"We were asked to quote, because we carried out the initial construction clean and impregnating the previous year,"explains Simon Bailey, director of CSB.

CSB tackled Grimsby's grime using the Lanceman Twin Hot and Cold Cleaning Unit – comprised of two hot water pressure washers and an operator welfare facility. When connected to the Lanceman Clean and Recycle – which collects 90% of the waste water – the unit recycles and returns the water back to the pressure washers, providing a continuous cleaning system.

The task was to clean and impregnate 5400 m2 of Chinese Granite within a five day slot, during the day, in a busy town centre using a two man team. The team had to start at 5am to enable the front of the shops to be completed prior to them opening. For the central walkway, the team had to wait until after 10pm to continue working.

A suitable working area was cordoned off without causing too much disruption to the public.

The team then set about the removal of the chewing gum using low pressure steam, moving on to the surface cleaning with the contained rotary cleaning heads which operate with 21l of water/min at 1000C with no chemical assistance. The waste (dirty water) is drawn back to the Lanceman Clean and Recycle, where the system filters and recycles the water for re-use in continuous cleaning process.

Once the cleaning process was completed the team then applied the impregnator through a nebular spray bottles. The impregnator protects against oil, grease, and tyre marks. It forms a transparent subsurface barrier just beneath the pavement surface which is highly effective in preventing the substances which cause staining from taking hold.

The task was successfully completed within the time allocated, producing a deep cleaning and impregnating rate of 1080m2 per day.

"The Twin Mobile Cleaning unit with operator welfare proves essential in the efficiency of this type of cleaning operation," says Bailey."It's an all in one solution and combined with the Clean and Recycle system, it allows continuous cleaning without the hassle of feed hoses and excessive water running everywhere.

"Also, the addition of the built in operator welfare facility including WC, canteen, kitchen and washing facilities, is a requirement not often specified by councils but it's seen as an essential by CSB Environmental." The system can also be used for internal cleaning applications such as shopping centres, car parks and graffiti removal. CSB believes the system is a cost and time effective solution for surface cleaning, with an environmental benefit of no chemical usage.
