Host von Schrader says ongoing water shortages highlight the environmental benefits of its approach to cleaning carpets

Host says its Dry Extraction Carpet Cleaning System is a proven system for achieving clean and dry carpets in both commercial and public sector facilities. Carpet is ready for use immediately after cleaning and when used regularly will not only enhance the appearance of a highly valuable commercial asset but also considerably lengthen its life.

However, Host claims its system can also help businesses contribute to a cleaner environment both inside and outside, saving water, energy, improving indoor air quality and reducing allergens. With water shortages and restrictions now becoming a reality in the UK, systems that can significantly help save water and conserve energy should prove popular.

"The Dry Extraction System really does mean that users benefit from cleaner and drier carpets and can contribute to helping keep their buildings environment safer and greener," says Mike Egerton, UK managing director of Host von Schrader.

"There are several main factors which contribute to its environmental qualities. Firstly, the system deep cleans carpet with 97% less water than typical high flow systems which generate large amounts of wastewater, water that is left in the carpet and which then evaporates, humidifying buildings and forcing air conditioners to work harder and use more energy."

"Tackling the effects of indoor air pollution and ensuring the air quality for visitors and employees within your organisation is a problem facing many commercial buildings such as, offices, hotels and public service buildings and especially those where carpet is the predominate floor covering used in the building.

"The causes of most indoor air quality problems are inadequate ventilation, reduced maintenance of cleaning, damp areas and elevated humidity levels most of these can be dealt with by keeping a building clean, dry and well ventilated. However, these are expensive and energy sapping, so, when it comes to cleaning and maintaining carpeted floor areas 'dry cleaning, not wet cleaning' is the mantra. Most important is to vacuum with a machine that incorporates adequate filtration to collect dust and allergens disturbed by the vacuuming process."

"By using Host's dry cleaning sponges and then vacuuming them removes dirt and reduces allergens that are embedded in the carpet. Carpets are left completely dry after cleaning so mould and mildew growth is not a problem. The sponges themselves contain no dyes, are non-toxic and are biodegradable so can be disposed of after use with no problems of waste management they can even be used for compost!

"We all hope that this current problem with water shortage is short lived and agree with those who comment that traditional wet cleaning of carpets uses a minimal amount of water. But the overall benefits to both the environment and cleaner healthier carpets cannot be overlooked."
