Quietly polishing off floorcare
April 1st 2009

At the Truvox stand at this year's Cleaning Show were David Overell,MD, and Gordon McVean, international sales and marketing director. Cleaning Matters stopped by for a quick catch up

By the middle of day two at The Cleaning Show,Overell (left) and McVean (right) have done great deal of demonstrating and talked to a whole slew of visitors."It's been a very exciting buoyant two days," says McVean."There have been some good new opportunities as Orbis is opening up a different market for us – daytime cleaning."The Orbis UHS cordless burnisher is the 'whisper quiet' floorcare machine, that Overell says is drawing people to the stand."This is the first time it's been seen in the UK, having been launched in Amsterdam,"explains Overell.

So what are the plus points of the new burnisher? McVean explains;"It's cordless, so there's no tripping over wires, and the built-in charger just plugs in. Operationally it's easy to use as the wheels make it simple to manoeuvre, and it also folds up making it convenient to store." McVean and Overell strongly believe that Orbis will win a large market share.

They think that the lower price of the machine – around £400 less than its predecessor's –will be a big factor in its take up."There's been a lot of retail activity in contract cleaning, lots of churn, lots of takeovers," says McVean.

"The economic situation in the high street is having a knock-on effect with retailers demanding extra savings in contract cleaning. This includes demanding savings from manufacturers on products to reduce outlay.

"As we know, 80% of contract cost is labour, so the only interesting savings are through labour savings. And labour costs can be further reduced through daytime cleaning." Daytime cleaning eliminates the need for extra night security staff, who are often hired to give cleaners access.A higher rate is usually paid to night cleaners, and there are possible insurance costs. There will also be energy savings as lights remain off.
