 Having a blast with restoration
February 1st 2009

Demon Pressure Washers cleaning solutions include specialist soda blasting equipment for smoke damage and fire restoration, that can save time on traditional methods

Afire will leave a building with charred and smoke damaged surfaces, along with a strong aroma of burnt substances which would normally require expensive restoration methods. Soda blasting can remove the soot and charring and also absorb the smell of burnt substances. After cleaning up with a vacuum cleaner, soda blasting leaves the building in a condition for redecorating and replacing furnishings.

Sodium bicarbonate is used as the blast media and is dispensed through a fine metering tube into the airstream exiting at high speed. It hits the surface to be cleaned and breaks up on contact with a hard surface such as wood or brick. The alkalinity and slight abrasiveness of the particles provide the cleaning action, leaving behind a fine dust which is readily vacuumable. The alkalinity is the key to neutralising the smell as the burnt surface is acid by nature.

Methods of blasting in this way include sealing most of the windows and installing a blower fan to extract air and spent media, either into the atmosphere if allowed or onto a wet wall to dissolve into a water solution. This method helps move the air and improve visibility for the operator. It also reduces the amount of dust to vacuum later.

Another benefit of soda blasting is that the soot and carbon particles are attached to the sodium bicarbonate dust, so they will not be deposited elsewhere. With the cleaning being carried out dry, there is no water damage or drying out times to worry about, just vacuum and wipe with a damp cloth and you have a clean, fresh smelling property again.

Demon will have the latest fire restoration equipment on display at Stand C70 at this year's Cleaning Show at the NEC between the 10th and 12th March and will be delighted to meet with new customers.
