Keeping trawlers shipshape
October 1st 2007

Trawlers based at the Scottish port of Peterhead are being kept pristine thanks to Nilfisk-ALTO pressure washers. The hot or cold water machines ensure decks and working areas are maintained to strict health and safety standards

Crews work in arduous conditions in the North Sea and North Atlantic to bring a variety of fish and shellfish to market.

Skippers have to keep their ships clean to ensure a safe working environment and good hygiene standards.Decks and fish processing areas are cleaned as often as needed at sea, and each vessel gets a thorough cleaning before returning to port.

"Some of the larger, more modern ships have stationary machines fitted in their engine rooms, feeding strategic outlets where crewmen plug in a high pressure hose and lance," says Jim Sinclair of Grampian Powerclean Equipment, distributor of Nilfisk- ALTO pressure washers.

"Others use mobile machines from Nilfisk-ALTO'S NEPTUNE and POSEIDON families that are plugged into the nearest power and water supplies.

"The Nilfisk-ALTO range is designed for economical, high performance cleaning in a wide range of food, agricultural and other industrial applications. This means we can provide a spread of cleaning capacities – with water pressures from around 100bar to more than 200bar – and a choice of hot or cold water machines, powered either by electricity at 400V, 230V or 110V, pneumatic or hydraulic power, or petrol and diesel engines. " The shipboard pressure washers use sea water, but skippers are encouraged to flush them out with fresh water after use whenever possible.
