Welcome to the November e-news from Cleaning Matters.
50% of you said people made a joke when you revealed that you worked in the Cleaning Industry – seems like a great icebreaker in that case, especially with the Christmas party season about to start. A wisecrack response is probably the case with a few industries in the UK, I'm sure dustmen, nurses, firemen and milkmen all get gyp, and funnily enough they are all providing essential services. Perhaps it is when a subject seems slightly taboo, to do with dirt, waste products, hazards and even death, that humour is used to diffuse any tension. After all, Harry Hill started out as a doctor.
Of course cleaning can actually be a matter of life and death, especially where the health industry is concerned. The recent findings from the Healthcare Commission’s 51 inspections related to healthcare associated infection, show that of the five Trusts fully compliant with Duties 2, 4, and 8 of the Hygiene Code, four are cleaned by outsourced cleaning contractors and only one is in-house cleaned. But what about further away from home? The UN World Toilet Day was on November 19th this year and aimed to help the 2.5 billion people (40%) of the world's population without a toilet. Worldwide, the lack of water and sanitation causes 5,000 deaths every day.
In an economic downturn it is easy to have a knee jerk protective response towards business, counting every penny and being careful not to waste budgets. Yet at this time of year it is traditional to think of others, especially those in need. I'd be interested to hear your opinions using this month's poll.
All the best
